What is Corrugated Roofing Sheet and what are the benefits and uses of Corrugated Roofing Sheets?

Corrugated roofing sheets refer to corrugated galvanized steel sheets used for roofing. They feature a characteristic corrugated profile with alternating ridges and grooves that make them rigid and strong. Corrugated roofing sheets have been used extensively for agricultural and industrial buildings due to their durability, lightweight, easy installation and low cost.

In addition to these advantages, corrugated roofing sheets also have excellent thermal performance. Their corrugated profiles create air pockets that improve insulation. This can help reduce heat transfer through the roof, decreasing cooling/heating costs for the building. The thermal conductivity of still air is much lower than that of steel and other metals. So the air pockets formed between the corrugated steel sheets and roof frame provide very effective insulation for the building.

Several factors affect the thermal insulation of corrugated roofing sheets:

•Sheet thickness: Thicker sheets tend to insulate better than thinner sheets due to decreased heat conduction.

•Corrugation size: Larger corrugations lead to bigger air pockets and better insulation. Smaller corrugations have less air space so they may not insulate as well.

•Coating type: Galvanized steel sheets with special coatings like polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) or plastisol can reflect more heat compared to regular zinc coated sheets. This further improves the thermal performance.

•Air circulation: Good airflow under the roof sheets helps dissipate heat and moisture, improving thermal comfort inside the building. Installing vents or open eaves can enhance air circulation.

•Installation method: Tightly screwed sheets with sealed overlaps tend to insulate better than loosely installed sheets with open gaps and seams. Proper installation according to the manufacturer's instructions is important for the best thermal results.

In summary, corrugated roofing sheets provide good thermal insulation for buildings due to the heat-reflecting air pockets formed in their corrugated profiles. Their thermal performance can be further enhanced by using thicker sheets, larger corrugations, special coatings, good airflow and proper installation. For areas with extreme weather conditions, additional insulation may still be required for the optimal energy efficiency and interior temperature control of the building.
